Lipo Foam and Ab Board After Liposuction: Do You Need Them?
Your faja does most of the work after liposuction, but it has one weak spot: the fabric follows the curves of your body, including the dips and folds where fluid and uneven swelling like to settle. That is why so many surgeons in Dubai, Colombia and Turkey recommend two extras under the faja: lipo foam and an ab board. This guide explains what each one does, which shape to choose and how to wear them.
General guidance only. Always follow your surgeon's instructions on when and how to use foam and boards.
What does lipo foam do?
Lipo foam is a soft medical foam that sits between your skin and the faja. It spreads the pressure of the garment evenly so the hooks, seams and edges do not leave marks, and it helps prevent the faja from creating creases in the treated areas during the first weeks.
- Placed on the abdomen, flanks and back, wherever you had liposuction
- Used mostly in stage 1, the first weeks after surgery
- Soft and comfortable, so it works even when the area is still tender
Our 3-piece medical white foam set gives you three pieces to place on the treated areas under your faja.
What does an ab board do?
An ab board (also called a tabla abdominal or lipo board) is a firmer, flat piece that goes over the abdomen under the faja. Where foam cushions, the board flattens: it keeps the pressure even across the whole tummy so the skin settles smooth and flat, and it stops the faja from folding when you sit.
Surgeons usually introduce the board once the first swelling goes down, often together with a stage 2 faja.
Which ab board shape do you need?
- Diamond shape, full abdomen: the flexible abdominal board covers the tummy from side to side. A good first board for most lipo and tummy tuck patients.
- Butterfly shape, wider coverage: the anatomical abdominal board gives wider coverage and more flexibility, useful after 360 liposuction.
- Lower back: the anatomical lumbar board protects the lower back area, which is often treated in a lipo 360 or BBL.
- Small, centre only: the small rigid board focuses on the centre of the abdomen, for smaller treated areas or petite frames.
How to wear foam and a board with your faja
- Put on a thin cotton layer or the faja lining first if your surgeon recommends one, so the foam does not sit directly on healing incisions.
- Place the foam pieces on the treated areas.
- Place the board over the abdomen, centred on the belly button.
- Close the faja from the bottom up, keeping the board flat.
- Check in the mirror: the board should not dig into your ribs or pelvis. If it does, the shape or size is wrong.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need both foam and a board?
Not always. Many patients use foam in the first weeks and switch to a board later. Some surgeons prefer only one. Ask yours which fits your procedure.
Can I wear an ab board after a BBL?
Yes, on the abdomen and back only, never on the buttocks. See our BBL recovery kit guide for the full list.
Can I return a board or foam set?
For hygiene reasons, boards and foam are only returnable in case of a factory defect. If you are unsure which shape to choose, message us on WhatsApp before ordering.
